Chelmsford was founded by a Royal Charter in 1199, but settlements go back to the Neolithic and later Bronze Age. The city has a particular heritage owed to the Romans. Henry VIII purchased the Boleyn estate here in 1516 where he kept his mistress who would later become his wife.
